Tuvalu Tide Gauge

A new tide gauge was installed and launched by the Tuvalu Minister for Communication & Transport, Hon. Monise Laafai with support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Pacific Community (SPC). Situated at the new wharf in Funafuti, the Tide Gauge will monitor weather, tides, sea level and land movement providing real time weather observations. There are 20 tide gauges installed and providing vital ocean and climate information in the Pacific. The Tide Gauges also provides real time observations and through COSPPac and BoM, SPC is able to publish Annual Tide Predictions, which have been of great benefit to local fishermen and women and related sectors for planning ocean and coastal activities. The installation of the new tide gauge has been made possible through the Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac), a program managed by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), Geoscience Australia, through the support of DFAT. Since it launched in 2012, COSPPac has been a major component of the Australian Government’s work with Pacific Island countries on adaptation to the impacts of climate variability and change. COSPPac has worked to build the capacity of Pacific Island National Meteorological Services (NMSs), Land & Survey Departments (LSDs), and other relevant agencies to understand and apply climate, ocean and sea level information for the benefit of island governments and communities. COSPPac is managed by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) in partnership with SPC, Geoscience Australia and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)

Improving Climate Communication for the Pacific | CCU

The Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac) through its Coordination and Communications Unit (CCU) supports Traditional Knowledge, Communication, Training and Capacity Development. During Phase 2 of COSPPac (2018 - 2022), the CCU centralises common program management functions and manages the technical resources needed to support the coordination, communications, training, and capacity development activities that are common across all three project components. Highlights over COSPPac2 include: • Enhanced communication, aiding NMS and stakeholders in disseminating information via social media and radio. • Supported collection and archiving of Traditional Knowledge (TK) about climate and ocean data in the TK database, worked with NMS to incorporate TK in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Niue, Samoa, and Tonga, enhancing the relevancy and accessibility of meteorological information. • Emphasis on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) in Pacific Meteorological Services, ensuring disability accessibility, inclusive communications, and planning for in-country activities. • Conducted regular capacity-building workshops for communities, government entities, NMHS, and others. Over 2,600 stakeholders, NMS and LDS staff participated in COSPPac2 training over 600 days from 2018-22. The 15 Pacific Island countries participating in the project are the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. It is the principal intergovernmental organisation in the region, owned and governed by its 27 member countries and territories. 🔗 For more about SPC's work, visit: https://www.spc.int/ Follow SPC here: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/spc.int/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/spc_cps LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/secretariat-of-the-pacific-community Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/spc_cps/

COSPPac2 Highlights – PSLGM (short)

Pacific Sea Level and Geodetic Monitoring (PSLGM) - Ensuring a Continuity of High-Quality Long-Term Sea Level Data for the Pacific. The PSLGM project operates under the Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac). This video highlights our Phase 2 achievements and initiatives that have strengthened climate and disaster resilience in the Pacific region. The primary goal of the project is to generate an accurate record of variance in long-term sea level for the Pacific region. The 14 Pacific Island countries participating in the project in phase 2 are the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. Thirteen of the participating countries host a permanent sea level monitoring station. These provide information on sea levels and tides. Palau does not have a permanent station, so tidal predictions for Palau are calculated from other sources. Highlights over COSPPac2 for the PSLGM project include: • Strengthened relationships and support from NMS and LDS, boosting local technical capacity. • Upgraded GNSS Refresh Stations. • Enhanced understanding of vertical land motion, sea level impacts, and absolute sea level data creation. • Expanded Pacific Tidal Prediction Calendars from 18 to 40 sites for 2024. • Launched Pacific Tides Mobile App for extended access to tide calendars More information at http://cosppac.bom.gov.au/ http://www.bom.gov.au/pacific/projects/pslm/index.shtml https://www.ga.gov.au/scientific-topics/positioning-navigation/geodesy/pacific-sea-level-and-geodetic-monitoring https://oceanportal.spc.int/
